The Story Behind the Art

The Pacific Herring Spawn

A late winter/early spring natural phenomenon where herring congregate in massive numbers in the shallow coastal waters of Vancouver Island to deposit their eggs, resulting in the spectacular characteristic milky turquoise-coloured water.

The spawn is a significant event on the coast, attracting a large variety of wildlife such as sea lions, seals, humpback and gray whales, orcas, eagles, gulls, diving ducks, and even terrestrial predators like wolves and bears to the shorelines.

This event fuels the entire ecosystem with nutrient-dense fish and eggs.
